Users with Disabilities...

User with a disability

It is important to consider people with disabilities, when designing your site, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, UK law requires you to do this. For further information on this you can visit http://www.disability.gov.uk/law.html.

Secondly, people with disabilities represent a viable market, so accommodating for their needs opens up your opportunities too.

The "forcing function" argument suggests that designing better interfaces for people with special needs will almost inevitably lead to better interfaces for all users. Not only this, but most workers / users with disabilities can be accommodated for at a very low cost.

I can help you to design the most suitable interface for all of your users, including those with disabilities. I understand the importance of involving users in the design process to ensure that the end interface is the most appropriate for their needs. I don't use 'token gestures' to ensure the site complies with the law and forget the end users themselves, as is so often the case.

Making the Web more accessible for users with various disabilities is, to a great extent, a matter of using HTML the way it was intended: to encode meaning rather than appearance. As long as a page is coded for meaning, it is possible for alternative browsers to present that meaning in ways that are optimised for the abilities of individual users and thus facilitate the use of the Web by disabled users.
