Domain Names & Hosting...

Clock snoozing

Once you have designed your web site how do your users access it? Every web site accessible via the internet, has an IP (Internet Protocol) address assigned to it. There are millions of web addresses consisting of a 4 part address in the format: x.x.x.x

Remembering what number represents what web address would be almost impossible (sending anyone to sleep). This is where "domain names" come to the rescue. Domain Names are a mapping of an IP address such as 213.171.193.26 to a name. In this case it is "www.lclimited.co.uk" which is an alias to the server "server26.livedns.org.uk". They are resolved (mapped) using a Domain Name Server (DNS).

If you want users to easily remember your web address, use something like www.yourcompany.com or www.yourproduct.com. But remember, you may not be able to register the domain name you want, because it is already taken and you'll have to come up with something else.

Domain Names cost around £25 (for 2 years registration) for a global (.com or "dot com") address or as little as £10 (for 2 years registration) for a UK (.co.uk or "dot co dot uk") address.

I can recommend several competitive registration and hosting companies. I can even register and setup your hosting for you.
